The Bromeliad Society of Australia is bringing its annual Spring Show to the Federation Pavilion on Saturday, 26th September, from 9am to 4pm, and Sunday, 27th, from 10am to 3pm, with growers from across New South Wales and interstate hauling in plants for what’s shaping up to be one of the group’s biggest displays of the year.
Spring is when bromeliads do their best work, throwing up flower spikes and colour combinations that most backyard gardens never see. Visitors will find rare and exquisite specimens from local, regional and interstate growers, all on display and for sale, including entries from BSA competition winners Harold Kuan, Nina Woodcock, Elizabeth Mudriczki and Kerry McNicol. Anna Ernst will bring her artistic bromeliad wall hangings, a departure from the usual pot-and-bench arrangement that’s become one of the show’s drawcards.
Tillandsia specialists Chris and Lap Larsen are travelling up from Victoria, joining Angela and Gary Flemming, who are known for the sheer range of bromeliads they bring to these events. Jan and Jon Townsend are making the longer trip down from Bonville with a haul of giant, brightly coloured Alcantareas and Neoregelias.
Organisers are running 20 plant sale tables across the weekend, restocked continuously as things sell, alongside books, pots and free advice from growers who’ve spent years figuring out what works. Parking is available on site and entry is free, though the society is asking visitors to bring a box for anything they buy. There’s also a lucky barrel loaded with plants worth checking before you leave.
