As we approach another bush fire season, now is the time to make sure you, your family and your home are prepared. We encourage everyone living in a bush fire prone area to know their risk and have a plan for what they will do if a fire threatens.
There are four simple steps to help you get bush fire ready.
1. DISCUSS – Make a Bush Fire Survival Plan
Sit down with your family and discuss what you will do if a bush fire threatens your home. Decide whether you will leave early or stay and defend, identify evacuation routes and alternative routes, choose a safe meeting place, and make arrangements for pets and livestock.
You can create your plan online in as little as five minutes at www.myfireplan.com.au, or use the NSW Rural Fire Service Bush Fire Survival Plan guide.
2. PREPARE – Get Your Home Ready
There are simple things you can do around your property to reduce the risk from bush fire. Keep grass short, clear leaves and debris from around your home, and maintain a cleared area where possible. Make sure your property is accessible to emergency services.
3. KNOW – Understand Bush Fire Alerts
Know the NSW bush fire alert levels and what they mean for you and your family. During a fire, monitor the alert level through the NSW Rural Fire Service website and the Fires Near Me app.
4. KEEP UP TO DATE – Stay Informed
Conditions can change quickly during a bush fire. Keep your phone charged and stay informed through reliable emergency information, websites and apps.
If you have questions about preparing your property or making a plan, contact your local brigade. We are here to help our community get bush fire ready.
