At Middle Dural Public School, a weekly drama lesson has become a highlight of the timetable. Led by drama teacher Dallas, students work in small groups to rehearse three different scenes, and everyone takes a turn at delivering a line in each one. Watching the children cheer each other on while their characters came to life, staff say, has been a joy.
The lessons grew out of the school’s strong focus on its High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) program. For some students, it has brought out talents they didn’t know they had. Over the term, the children have prepared performance pieces shaped by their own voices, and plenty of creative ideas have surfaced along the way.
All of that work will be on show at the upcoming CAPA Spectacular, which the school sees as a celebration of the students’ effort, imagination and growth.
It has been a busy stretch for the school community beyond the stage, too. Fathers and other special people turned out for the Father’s Day breakfast, and the Book Parade drew parents, carers, grandparents and friends from Dooral.
The Khoury family supplied the pizzas for the breakfast, and the school is grateful for its parents’ ongoing support, from P&C fundraisers to the canteen. At the book fair, generosity helped the school and encouraged a love of reading. And yes, Wally was eventually found.
