Madge Roughley was born at Inchneuk Private Hospital in Parramatta in 1925. Madge was the eldest daughter of Elizabeth (Lil) and Eric Carlson from Arcadia. Elizabeth Sidney Waddell Norquay had married Eric “Jack” Waldemar Carlson in 1923 and their first daughter, Madge, arrived two years later. At the time of Madge’s birth, Elizabeth’s occupation was listed as ‘home duties’ and Eric’s as ‘orchardist’. Madge and her younger sister Shirley Carlson were not given middle names as their mother disliked having too many middle names, and she did not want to burden her two girls with the same.
Throughout her life, at places she worked, in community groups and churches she attended, Madge made friends, cared for people, and was well loved. She had enjoyed large 80th and 90th birthday celebrations with family and friends in 2005 and 2015. Madge lived with Lesley, Paul and her granddaughters for 22 years, and kept good health until the final year of her life, moving to nursing home care in Mosman in mid 2017. Madge died peacefully surrounded by family on 31st July 2018, in her 93rd year.
