The long running fire season of 2019-2020 has finally eased and has seen Glenorie Brigade move from being continuously operational fighting fires throughout NSW and southern Qld, to storm damage control and mitigation in the local area. The prayed-for rains have brought massive relief with all fires in NSW now classified as being out or under control.
This break in fire protection has allowed the brigade to move forward with postponed training, activities and planning for the future.
Currently, we have ten new trainees participating in preparation for bush fire fighting assessments. Volunteers are the backbone of the Rural Fire Service and it is members of the community from whom we build our brigade. If you have been considering joining the Rural Fire Service, come along and see what it is we do and how you can be a part of it, new volunteers are always welcome.
Regular training is important to ensure members’ skills are ready for an emergency. Recent training with Hillside brigade involved pumping exercises, practicing drafting from static water sources and transferring between trucks, a skill set often needed on the fire ground.
To you, the community, we thank you for the support and contributions that have kept us going; the water, food and financial assistance that is essential to keep the brigade up and running. Careful planning is now under way as to how to best utilise the resources going forward.
The rains may have brought some relief from the severe fire warnings, but it is important to remember that the fire season continues until March 31st and any pile burns until that time will still require a permit.
