Galston Garden Club will meet earlier than usual this November, holding its final gathering of the year in the first week of the month instead of the 2nd Wednesday. It will also be the club’s last meeting until February 10th, 2027.
The guest speaker will be Dr David Fisher, who will speak on “Regeneration”. The club is inviting anyone curious to come along as a visitor to the year’s closing meeting.
Members will have plenty to talk about, because the newsletter also carries a home-garden story with a modern twist. One member and her husband recently redesigned the front garden of their Galston home with a little help from AI. They wanted colour and good looks without much upkeep, but had no professional landscape designer. Armed with photographs, measurements and a few ideas, the member began chatting with ChatGPT, which took in the garden’s shape and aspect, the strong afternoon sun, the soil and the couple’s preferences.

The planning stayed flexible. A magnolia was the first choice of feature tree, but a weeping cherry won out. Supporting plants include Carissa, Little Cons, Nandina ‘Obsession’, Gaura, Dianella ‘Cassa Blue’ and Salvia ‘Mystic Spires Blue’, which has striking blue flowers.
ChatGPT also covered soil preparation, planting techniques, tree staking, irrigation and watering. The couple found the process enjoyable, educational and surprisingly personal, and it gave them the confidence to do a job that could have called for considerable professional assistance. They are delighted with the garden and eager to see it mature.
