DURAL — It started with an annual general meeting, which rarely sounds like fun. But by the time the Round Corner Dural Probus Club wrapped up its AGM at the Galston Club recently, members had already been through a round of jokes, elected their new committee, and beaten each other at trivia.
The meeting, held on a Monday morning at 9:30 am as usual, skipped the guest speaker this time around — AGMs tend to fill the schedule on their own. Instead, the club’s resident joke master opened proceedings with a run of stories that kept the room warm before anyone got near a motion. After morning tea, the committee for the coming year was voted in. With the formalities done early, groups split off for a trivia session that, by most accounts, got fairly spirited.
The club gathers every second Monday at the Galston Club, drawing retirees from the Hills District who are looking for something more than an empty calendar.
In the weeks leading up to the AGM, members have been busy beyond the meeting room. A day trip to the Hawkesbury took the group through Windsor — one of Australia’s oldest towns — for a walk along its historic streets before settling in for lunch at the Church Bar. It’s a route the club has taken before, and it keeps drawing them back: the river-valley scenery, the colonial-era architecture, the food.
The following week brought a change of pace. A picnic at Turkey’s Nest Reserve in Beaumont Hills, set around a duck pond with shaded shelters and walking tracks. Unhurried. Outdoor. Exactly the sort of afternoon that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.
The club is actively welcoming new members and visitors. Contact details: [email protected] or Lei at 0412 585 741.
