What started as a tough little fencing job turned into a great reminder of the power of mates helping each other when needed.
We recently set out to install a simple 100-metre star picket and wire fence to clarify the boundary of our bush block, after ongoing issues around its location. With sandstone bedrock, no power or water, and tricky access, contractors weren’t keen to take on such a small but demanding job — so we decided to tackle it ourselves. A relatively small job we had been putting off for some time as we knew it would be somewhat painful.
After days of jackhammering star pickets into rock, we reached the final stage and were rather over it. That’s when our local Landcare group appeared on the horizon like a calvary undertaking a final charge.
With extra hands, practical know-how, and plenty of laughs, they helped us run and strain the wire, turning a draining task into a genuinely enjoyable morning. The shared effort — and the well-earned morning tea afterwards made the project feel far less daunting and motivated us to get cracking in the run to the finish line.
The experience showed us how Landcare is about more than land management. It’s about community, connection, and working together to make caring for our properties easier and more rewarding. New local landholders are always welcome to join in and be part of that spirit- just take a moment before you hand over the jack hammer!
