Bushcare volunteers across West Pennant Hills will take part in a range of conservation activities this June as three local environmental groups welcome new members.

The Hills Shire Council-supported groups will meet on Sunday, June 14, across several reserves in West Pennant Hills, with residents encouraged to take part in hands-on conservation work while learning more about the area’s unique natural environment.

Among the groups meeting is the Currawong Bushcare Group, which works in Currawong Reserve from 8 am to 12 pm. Volunteers help care for an area of Blue Gum High Forest, listed as a Critically Endangered Ecological Community under both State and Federal legislation.

The reserve also provides habitat for the Powerful Owl, with volunteers focusing on removing Privet, weedy vines and annual weeds to encourage native regeneration. Planting has also taken place in areas requiring additional restoration support. The group also pauses for morning tea and a chat during the session.

Later in the day, the Pygmy Possum Patch Bushcare Group will meet from 1 pm to 4 pm at Colbarra Place Reserve, where volunteers are working to improve habitat conditions for the Eastern Pygmy Possum.

Bushcare efforts at the site include weed removal and replanting native species to help support the small native marsupial and strengthen the surrounding ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the Bellbird Creek Bushcare Group will meet from 9 am to 12 pm at George Thornton Reserve, where volunteers work within another remnant section of Critically Endangered Blue Gum High Forest.

The Bellbird Creek site is surrounded by residential development and divided by the creek running through its centre, making ongoing regeneration and weed management particularly important for the health of the reserve.

All three groups welcome volunteers of all ages and experience levels, with no prior Bushcare experience necessary. The groups meet once a month.

New volunteers participating in Bushcare projects with The Hills Shire Council are required to complete the online application form before attending: Bushcare Volunteer Application.
