Our first night back was a night of cheers as well as tears, as we held our AGM & then General meeting. We are immensely proud of our Patron & club member Judy Horton who was awarded an OAM for her contribution to gardening. To an enthusiastic round of applause Judy was presented with a lovely bunch of flowers by outgoing President Mark Sutherland-Harris. We also warmly thanked & farewelled our President Mark as he stepped down as President. Our constitution only allows Executive members to serve in a position for a maximum of three years. Mark has been a popular, hardworking & dedicated president & while we are sad to see him step aside, we also warmly welcomed Sue Montgomery as our new President.
It was also a night tinged with sadness as we farewelled one of the original members of the Galston Garden Club. Barbie & Geoff have been members of the club since its inception in 1983, as well as holding almost every executive position; they have been enthusiastic members throughout their time with us. However coastal life & Narrabeen beckons, we presented a tearful Barbie with a large bunch of flowers and we wished them well in their new home.
And soon matters turned to business as we welcomed new members & visitors, introduced the new look Executive & Social Committee. Our guest speaker for the evening was our Patron Judy Horton and she took us on a pictorial tour around Tasmania. As a Guide for Botanica Tours, Judy had many tales to tell of these stunning homes & gardens, many that have had continuous family occupation or association. Tasmania is such a beautiful place to visit & travel through & Judy whetted our appetite.
The Open Gardens committee is already starting to make preliminary preparations for this years Open Gardens Weekend, so save the dates of 19th, 20th & 21st October. Are you a garden owner who would like to be a part of the Open Gardens weekend or do you know someone that has a garden & might be interested in being part of our Open Gardens weekend? The Garden Committee is always looking for new gardens to maintain the variety of differently styled gardens on the weekend. All money raised on the day goes towards a number of charities and in 2017 we were able to assist 31 charities with donations. Please contact Bill Fleming our Open Gardens Convenor on 96532394 or email: [email protected] if you would like to be a part of this wonderful event.
We hope to see you at one of our club meetings & to join us for another happy gardening year.
