From one country’s women to another’s

“On a hot afternoon, a group of women in Kopianda village, Papua New Guinea, sit beneath the shelter of a ‘haus win’, sharing stories about their latest initiative: a baking enterprise using drum ovens. The women are the backbone of society, caring for their families, tending to food gardens, and now contributing financially to ensure the survival of their people.”

Our September meeting marked International Day with a sincere appreciation of our country of study, Papua New Guinea, and of course we pay homage to the women of this rugged country.

We welcomed guest speaker Paul McKinnon, amoung other special guests, to our Papua New Guinea tropical themed lunch. All the cooks excelled themselves with dishes including chicken, sweet potato and coconut soup, and roast pork and vegetables, followed by an array of delicious desserts; tropical fruits, sago pudding, passionfruit pavlova and pineapple and cream cheese slice, to name a few. It was a most enjoyable afternoon.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank two kind donors with generous donations of fabric, yarn, craft items and sewing machines. Look out for details of our craft competition in the next issue.

We meet on the second Wednesday of each month at the Galston Health and Resource Centre. We are always looking for new members and would love to welcome you to our AGM in October.
