After 47 years serving the Galston community through its local pharmacies, including Galston Pharmacy, Cathie Gauci retired from the pharmacy industry on 3rd July, marking the end of a remarkable career.
Cathie’s journey began when she left school in Year 10. Her grandfather, Cosimo Nati, asked his friend Warren Griffiths, who ran the local chemist in Galston, whether there might be work for the young school leaver. Cathie was offered a position — and from that day on, she never really left the village.
For the past 30 years, Cathie has worked alongside Kakada Tham at Galston Health Sense Pharmacy as Senior Pharmacy Coordinator. During that time, she helped train many young pharmacy assistants and became a familiar, trusted face to generations of customers. Kakada still remembers when a glamorous young Cathie first began working with her, spending entire shifts on her feet in stilettos.
Cathie and her husband of 43 years, Jim, are now preparing to leave the area and move to Harrington Waters. Their two sons, Nathan and Daniel, are part of the next chapter, with Nathan owning a pizza shop there, where Cathie plans to lend a hand. She is also looking forward to spending more time with her two granddaughters.
With nearly half a century spent working closely with the local community, Cathie has been a steady presence in many people’s lives, watching families grow and change over the years. She has made many true friends among customers and workmates alike and will be sorely missed at the pharmacy. While she may be moving away, Cathie will still return to the area from time to time to visit family and friends.
