Dural Mens Shed Helping Young People Build Their Futures

By Julian Leeser MP

I recently visited Dural Mens Shed to see firsthand an inspiring mentoring program helping students from Galston High School develop practical skills and prepare for careers in the trades.

Over the past three years, dedicated volunteers have worked with around 100 students, giving them hands-on experience in woodworking, metalworking, mechanics and electronics, while teaching important workplace skills including teamwork, problem-solving, responsibility and resilience.

What impressed me most was hearing that every student from last year’s group has gone on to secure an apprenticeship.

I enjoyed speaking with the students about their career ambitions, including Brydon, who hopes to follow his father into concreting. The boys clearly value the opportunity to learn from experienced mentors and explore different trades outside the traditional classroom.

With local businesses struggling to find skilled apprentices, programs like this demonstrate the enormous value of connecting schools, volunteers and industry.

A special thank you to Chris Thomas and the wonderful volunteers at Dural Men’s Shed who generously give their time and expertise to help the next generation succeed.

This is a fantastic example of our community working together to create real opportunities for young people.
