Box Hill ‘Black Spot’ Upgrade Moves Ahead

The Hills Shire Council and the NSW Government are progressing plans to upgrade one of Box Hill’s busiest intersections in response to the area’s rapid growth. Transport for NSW has acquired the final parcel of land at 336 Annangrove Road required to deliver the long-awaited upgrade of the Annangrove Road, Withers Road and The Water Lane intersection, commonly referred to as a ‘black spot’.

Mayor of the Hills Shire, Michelle Byrne, said the acquisition represents an important step for Box Hill, a suburb expected to accommodate more than 50,000 residents in the coming years.

“This is a step in the right direction. It is a major boost for one of the region’s most important road projects and a really positive step for our community,” she said.

“Finalising the land acquisition means we can move forward with an upgrade that will improve safety, reduce congestion, and support reliable public transport for decades to come,” she added.

She thanked Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison, for her commitment to resolving issues affecting thousands of daily commuters, as well as Mark Hodges for facilitating discussions with the Minister.

Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison said the Box Hill upgrade forms part of the Government’s broader plan to improve Western Sydney’s road network.

“We’re delivering the road upgrades Western Sydney has been waiting for. For too long, this part of the region has faced congestion, long commutes and road safety risks.

This upgrade in Box Hill is a practical improvement that will make everyday travel safer, easier and more reliable,” she said.

“The Minns Labor Government is investing $5.5 billion over four years to upgrade Western Sydney roads, supporting growth and building a safer, more reliable network integrated with public transport,” she added.

The land acquisition is funded through the Bus Priority Infrastructure Program, a rolling initiative that delivers infrastructure upgrades to improve the reliability and efficiency of bus services across Greater Sydney.

With land now transferred to Council at no cost, the project can move into construction.

Works on Annangrove Road will see the corridor widened to four lanes between Windsor Road and Edwards Road, improving traffic flow during peak periods. The new intersection will include:

• Two lanes in each direction on all approaches
• Dual right turn lanes on Annangrove Road
• Dedicated right turn lanes for Withers Road and The Water Lane
• Dedicated left turn lanes for all approaches
• Bus lanes to improve public transport reliability

This project is jointly funded through developer contributions collected by Council, Special Infrastructure Contributions collected by the NSW Government and additional funding from Transport for NSW.

It is now open for public tender to engage a suitable contractor, with construction set for later this year.
