It’s great to be back into the routine, like the School Term Times for example, we know where we need to be and what we perhaps should be doing!
At the Quilters group we are getting organised too, our year ahead is exciting as two of the new projects which were in the planning stages last year are now in full swing.
One of the ‘new’ projects is Grace’s Place — a Homicide Victims Support Group facility.
This marvellous new centre opened recently in Doonside, fulfilling a long planned dream of Grace Lynch’s, the mother of Anita Coby.
Many will remember the murder of Anita Coby in 1986.
Two families became connected and supportive of each other when Ebony Simpson, a nine year old girl was also murdered in 1992. Garnering support from each other, Ebony Simpson’s parents, Christine and Peter Simpson along with Grace and Gary Lynch became united in trying to find some goodness from within the horrors of those two brutal murders.
Many years in the making, this centre has now been created in memory of Anita Coby and has been named in honour of Grace Lynch, (Anita Coby’s mother).
This centre; this remarkable healing home will care for and nurture young children from 3yrs to 17yrs. The children who ARE always the victims of homicide. Take the time to seek further information about this amazing venture, it’s an encouraging story.
We had the pleasure of meeting Robert Taylor, the President of the committee for Grace’s Place when he visited our group meeting recently. At that meeting we presented bed quilts and a cheque to add further help to this remarkable venue.
Along with gifts from other quilting groups, the bedrooms are now warm welcoming havens for children and their carers and families. These quilts become a gift which each child can keep as their own.
A VERY LARGE crowd of Community helpers, building site workers, Police associated with the Homicide Squad, the Planning Committee and associated staff, Knox Grammar School, Mountain View Adventist College, so very many supporters attended the Official Opening on one of our hottest days this summer. The new Centre has been extremely well supported by local Councils, State and Federal Governments, local communities and businesses alike.
It was a wonderful day that will be remembered for a very long time.
Grace’s Place was opened on 2nd February 2023. Anita Coby died on 2nd February 1986.
Arcadian quilters meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday of each month commencing at 9.30am. Our venue is the Community Health Centre, The Glade, Galston.
