Bouncing through the happy chaos of Christmas and the New Year my secret thoughts flew to the pages of my new diary. The pages were empty!! The lines ran from left to right in an orderly fashion… promising to follow into the next week in the same orderly fashion.
But this is not how we live, nor would we want to hold such a daydream for too long; friends, family, social commitments soon come “knocking on our door”.
A clever new idea came to our ‘creative quilting door’ at the last formal meeting for 2022. Sometimes we are given embroidery and doilies from past generations; from our mothers or favourite aunts – or someone else’s older family members and the question arises, what could we do with these treasures?
A suggested idea was to put doilies and embroidery into a quilt… the question then became… how? How best to preserve someone else’s delicate work?
At our final meeting last year we were shown an excellent example of a quilt which had been created with ‘treasures’ — a full size quilt using a combination of doilies and embroidery and it was just delightful.
Beautifully presented in largish hexagon patterns, each doily or piece of embroidery was made into a hexagon shape, then all pieces were sewn together.
Perfect we all thought, would this become the Christmas holiday project for some of us? As we move into the New Year may we extend our good wishes to everyone for 2023.
Arcadian Quilters meet on the 1st, 3rd and 5th Wednesday of each month commencing at 9.30am. Our venue is the Community Health Centre, The Glade, Galston.
