For the first time two local ceramic artists will be joining hundreds of potters and ceramic artists across the nation and opening their studios to the public.
Hosted by the Australian Ceramics Association this is an annual event, and is an opportunity for the broader community to step inside the creative spaces of contemporary potters and ceramicists. It is a chance to experience the wonders of working with clay and meet the local skilled artisans who have developed their unique voice within this ancient practice.
Visitors to Glenorie will see the studio of Jen Lyall where the majority of her work is fired in her wood kiln. Her work strongly reflects the unique connection between the maker, the material and the process. Jen’s belief is that the handmade object has a unique quality that brings infinite pleasure, connects us to others and enriches our lives.
Jen’s talented daughter Emily Byrne will also be displaying her beautiful hand carved native plant based designs, donating some of the proceeds to a conservation charity.
Located in Berrilee, Janine Schenkel will open her rustic rural studio to visitors. Janine creates wheelthrown and altered porcelaneous pieces for the garden and home. Her designs are inspired by the textures and patterns from nature and her rural surrounds, expressed in her application of decals and carved sgraffito on the clay surfaces.
Rona Sissons unique and quirky sculptures use clay to create the creatures of her imagination and Rona delights in expressing political commentary. Her work will be on display around Janine’s garden.
Visitors to both studios will have the opportunity to tour the workshop, talk to the artists and purchase original handmade ceramics.
