Major Road Upgrade for Box Hill Traffic Hotspot

The Hills Shire Council has reached a pivotal moment in its efforts to address a long-standing traffic hotspot in Box Hill, as joint work with the NSW Government unlocks the next phase of a major road upgrade. The completion of land acquisition at 336 Annangrove Road by Transport for NSW paves the way for improvements to the intersection linking Annangrove Road, Withers Road and The Water Lane.

The intersection has become emblematic of the challenges facing rapidly growing suburbs, where new housing developments increase demand on infrastructure that was never designed for such volumes. Residents have adapted with earlier departures, longer commutes and daily congestion, but the strain has remained evident.

Now, with all land secured, the project is set to transition from planning into delivery. The upgrade is part of a broader four-year, $5.5 billion commitment to improving Western Sydney’s road network, targeting areas under pressure from population growth and evolving transport needs.

The proposed redesign introduces multiple lanes in each direction, dedicated turning lanes at all approaches, and bus lanes to support more reliable service. In addition, Annangrove Road will be widened to four lanes between Windsor Road and Edwards Road, a change expected to ease peak-hour traffic flow.

Backed by a mix of funding sources—including developer contributions, Special Infrastructure Contributions and the Bus Priority Infrastructure Program—the project reflects a coordinated response to growth. With the tender process now underway, construction is anticipated to begin later in 2026, offering a sense of progress for a community that has been waiting for meaningful change.
