On 25 July 2017, the Galston Equestrian Club (GEC) hosted an information evening about equine nutrition at the Galston Club. It was surprising how simply we can feed our horses, how easy it is to over-feed them and how efficient our feeding can become when we tap into the scientific resources of our local experts. On the night, we were dazzled with the science of soil testing, grass testing, poo testing and even hair testing outlined by our recently graduated Sophie Fletcher BAnVetBioSci (Hons I), MAnSci.
On a sunny 13th August, we held another popular Horsemanship Day with 20 participants, run by Barbara Anderson. Everyone made great progress getting their horses confident with the obstacles, first on the ground and then riding. An impromptu game of horse soccer was played with members helping each other’s horses get used to the large ball rolling towards them. This was followed by a social picnic lunch. Throughout the year GEC holds these casual fun days where the only aim is to have fun and enjoy a day out with your horse. Thanks to those who helped with the setting up and taking down of the practice equipment.
Five of our members attended a very pleasant afternoon with artist Christine Gresham of Glenorie on Saturday 26th August. Apart from enjoying afternoon tea and much chatting, we all managed to paint a picture of our horse’s head. Christine walked us through the procedure with never ending patience and advice. Everyone happily managed to paint a pretty good likeness of their horse. We will be offering this again, so if you’re keen to discover your hidden talents, why not give it a try? It’s a great opportunity to be advised by a very talented artist, and have a great time.
Another beautiful day in the sun for the horses and riders that participated in the Clear Round show jumping at our grounds in Arcadia, on Sunday 27th August. The rounds started as low as tiny cross rails, and we finished the day with more brave horses and riders jumping 1.05m. A good number of riders turned up with most of them riding two or three rounds of show jumping. These days are always an excellent opportunity to get a bit braver and go a little higher. Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that make these days possible.
A picture perfect riding day set the scene for GEC’s last Working Equitation clinic with Kim Peterson of the year. Clinic participants learnt about riding the obstacles and how to train for them. Kim shared many tips and informative anecdotes with her signature down to earth style. Riders practiced how to walk and prepare themselves for the course, and, more about the rules and the rider’s responsibilities for their course ride. GEC will be running some more WEQ days in 2018 with an expanded format.
