With Christmas, New Year and summer looming The Galston Concerts team are planning a great 2021 line-up of post- COVID Classics from leading professionals performing in Galston Uniting Church.
Next Gen talents including national prize-winners resident in the Hills and Hornsby area will also ‘spotlight’ in programs through next year – if postpandemic health trends permit.
2020 has allowed the team to build for future concerts, including ‘young’ and ‘old’ links to Musica Viva Australia, a global leader in concerts networking, celebrating their 75th anniversary this year.
The ‘young’ connections are musicians from our district who were grand finalists in Musica Viva’s inaugural Strike A Chord on-line national chamber music competition for secondary school ensembles.
Kenthurst resident Jack Theakston, a scholarship student at Hills Grammar and Young Musician of the Year 2020-21 for The Galston Concerts, was the cellist of the Piccolo Piano Quartet, one of only twelve Strike A Chord grand final groups.
Other finalists included the Lammoyip Piano Trio from Barker College, and students from northwest Sydney who attend Abbotsleigh, The Kings School and the Conservatorium High School.
Members of the Lashavi Trio, from the Conservatorium’s Rising Stars project, third place winners in the competition, have all performed as soloists in past Galston series. Jack also triumphed this year, at the age of 13, winning third prize in the 25 year and under strings section of the Melbourne International Piano and Strings Festival Competition. He will perform as cellist, organist and, hopefully, as a ‘Piccolo’ in the 2021 Galston line-up.
The ‘old’ (as in not-so-young) link to Musica Viva? Galston Concerts Artistic Co-Director Rob Harris, who played at Musica Viva’s Easter festivals way back in the 1960s while a student of Music Viva founder Richard Goldner, in late November performed in a concert honouring the 75th anniversary celebrations.
