Says David: “It’s rewarding and a pleasure to drive people who are over 65 and are unable to drive to their doctor’s or hospital appointments or on a shopping trip once or twice a week.”
Linda Wake, KNC-Transport and Volunteer Coordinator based at the Galston Community Health Centre, wishes to recruit more volunteer drivers who live in the locality. The requirement usually involves picking a client up from his or her home in the Galston, Dural, Arcadia, Glenorie areas, taking them to the surgery, hospital or supermarket and bringing them home again. Waiting time is usually between half an hour and two hours; occasionally longer. A kilometre allowance to cover fuel costs is paid, based on distance driven, starting from and finishing at the driver’s home.
