Glenorie Probus Club

Aerial view of Galston Community Center with sports facilities and surrounding greenery.

Glenorie Probus Club this month visited ANSTO at Lucas Heights where they learnt about the activities in the Nuclear Energy field in Australia. After a walk around the site they were given an insight into the operations there.

Its core work and services include the production of a large share of Australia’s radioactive isotopes used to diagnose and treat diseases like cancer; the operation of the Open Pool Australian Light-water (OPAL) multi-purpose research reactor; and the provision of tools like particle accelerators and neutron beams for studies in health, materials, forensics and the environment. This was very enlightening for the members and all now have an understanding of this important facility and its benefits to the community.

The guest speaker this month was Jenny Bradley who soke about the History of Hayes Park, Galston from the 1890s when it was the site of the Galston and District Flower and Ag show.

While the Galston & District Flower & Agricultural Show itself is mostly remembered historically, the tradition of gardening and community events continue today. We are grateful for the families that established our local culture.

The Club meets on the at 11.00am on the 4th Wednesday of the month at Glenorie RSL and new members are welcome.
