Galston Uniting Church turns 30

Hey everyone – we’re 30! It’s time for us to celebrate and we’ll be doing just that on the weekend of 26 – 28 October – and there’ll be something for everyone.

We’ve been 30 years at Galston, but in fact we have a heritage that goes back over 176 years to the early settlers of the district. These were the orchardists and market gardeners who followed the good soils out along the ridge tops to establish their farms and provide fresh fruit and vegetables for the Sydney market. They soon established places of worship as well, initially in people’s homes before they were able to build a church. These churches became a focus around which communities were built. Many community leaders were also leaders in the church.

Galston Uniting was formed by folk from three of these former churches; Arcadia Uniting, Dural Uniting, and Glenorie Uniting, when they came together to worship in the mid 1980’s.

At that stage we had no home of our own, so we were lovingly accommodated by our Christian friends of the Seventh Day Adventist Church at Galston, until our own church was completed in School Road in 1988.

A Book Launch

The rich history of these churches and the people who have been a part of them, is the subject of a book which is to be launched on 27 October to coincide with the anniversary. The book is titled “Church In The Hills”. The author Trevor Knight, is a lifelong Hills resident and member of Galston Uniting. The book of 150 A4 pages, contains over 100 photographs of what life was like in this important agricultural area, the fun they had and their experiences of life and faith. In addition, it details some of the highlights of our last 30 years at Galston.

The book will be available for sale to anyone who would like to order a copy at the cost price of $37 plus $15 postage and handling. Copies may be ordered by contacting Elizabeth Garlick (9653 2039), at the church office on Tuesday’s and Fridays, or email: [email protected].
