Treasured Finds at White Elephant

The phrase ‘white elephant’ has long referred to an unwanted possession—something no longer needed by one person but valued by another. More than a century ago, churches embraced the idea through ‘white elephant sales’, where donated goods were sold to raise funds and give pre-loved items a new purpose.

That tradition lives on at White Elephant, a pre-loved shop at Anglicare Hopetoun Village in Castle Hill, one of five retirement living villages on the Anglicare estate. Stocked with donated clothing, books, homewares and unique finds, the store gives quality items a second life while providing an affordable shopping destination for the local community.

What makes White Elephant unique is that it is run entirely by four retired resident volunteers. More than just a place to shop, the store has become a welcoming social hub where people can meet, chat and connect.

“The volunteers perform a valuable service by creating a social environment while raising funds for leisure activities for residents”, says White Elephant manager John Ward.

The shop offers a constantly changing selection of donated goods, with new stock arriving every week. Shelves are filled with everything from kitchenware, books and glassware to paintings, luggage, collectables and household items, all priced well below retail value.

Most donations come from residents and their families, giving unwanted items a new home while reducing waste. Proceeds from every sale are managed by a resident committee and reinvested in the village, funding outings, lunches, outdoor furniture and other amenities that benefit the community.

The shop is at its busiest in the lead-up to Christmas, when seasonal decorations, wrapping paper and cards are added to the shelves, making it a popular stop for festive bargains.

White Elephant is part of a network of volunteerrun shops at Anglicare Hopetoun Village, alongside outlets selling women’s clothing, Mobile Pantry produce and handcrafted items made by the village craft group.
