Arcadian Artists Open Studios on November 7 and 8

Every finished painting, glass piece or turned bowl has a beginning somewhere, in an idea, a habit or a stubborn urge to make something. On the weekend of the 7th and 8th November, visitors can go looking for those beginnings themselves, when five rural studios open to the public and more than 35 artists invite people into the places where their work happens.

The setting is part of the story. Dural, Galston and Arcadia form a rural enclave on the edge of the city, and over the weekend, arrows along the roads will lead you from one property to the next.

At each stop you will meet artists and artisans whose enthusiasm and passion have long set the Arcadian Artists apart. The range of crafts is wide: glass artists, jewellers, painters, sculptors, wood turners, felt artists, printmakers and textile artists, to name only some.

No two studios are alike. Each has its own approach and expression, which is why visiting every one is worthwhile. The real value of the day is the conversation, with the people who made the work explaining how they make it. Thousands of artworks will be there to admire, or to take home. A handmade piece makes a thoughtful Christmas present, and you will know exactly who made it.

The trail has deep local roots. About 40 years ago, a small group of local artists launched it, and it has since grown into an iconic annual rural event with 35 artists taking part. Plenty of visitors treat it as a fixture of the year.

You can come any time from 9.00am to 5.00pm on Saturday and Sunday, 7th and 8th November. Admission is free. A map of the studios and full details are at www.arcadianartists.net.au, and printed brochures will be at all the studios and many local cafes. Bendigo Bank supports the event, which brings fun and creativity to a stunning part of the world.
