Walk Safely To School Day: A Cherished Arcadian Tradition

Community gathering at Galston Rural Fire Brigade station for safety event.

Walk Safely To School Day is a special occasion that brings the entire Arcadian community together. For over fifteen years, parents, students, and local residents have celebrated this meaningful event with enthusiasm and community spirit.

The day begins at the Arcadian Rural Fire Brigade Station, where volunteer officers warmly welcome families, proudly display fire trucks, and answer questions from curious children and parents, often with a few friendly dogs in tow. Adding a unique touch to the day were our duelling bagpipers: leading the walk was ex-alumnus and bagpiper Mr Jock McDonald, followed at the rear of the line with P&C Life Member Mr Rolfe Chrystal.

Their lively and rhythmic music inspired families as they walked safely to school in a most harmonious way.

Joining the procession were school equestrian riders and their horses, creating a vibrant atmosphere alongside students, families, and dedicated Rural Fire Brigade volunteers. The brigade provided essential traffic support, ensuring everyone’s safety as the community made its way up Arcadia Road into the school grounds.

At school, parents prepared and served a delicious breakfast of bacon and egg rolls and warm Milo, a comforting way to start the day after the energising walk. Beyond promoting walking as a healthy lifestyle, this event celebrates the strong community connections that make Arcadia so special.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mr Jock McDonald and Mr Rolfe Chrystal for their ongoing support, the Arcadian Rural Fire Brigade for their dedication, and all parents, staff, students, and community members who help make Walk Safely To School Day an outstanding tradition.
