Hornsby Art Prize Returns with Exceptional Contemporary Artworks

The judging panel have made their selections, with 85 artworks being shortlisted for Hornsby Shire Council’s 2023 Hornsby Art Prize.

The finalist works of Painting, Drawing, Printmaking, Digital Art Stills and Sculpture will be on exhibition at Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre from 20 October until 5 November 2023.

Hosted in partnership with the Hornsby Art Society, the Hornsby Art Prize is a national art competition and exhibition celebrating Australian artists. This year, the competition has a total prize pool of $23,000, with the major prize $10,000.

The Art Prize has attracted over 600 entries from around Australia. Hornsby Shire Mayor, Philip Ruddock said the quality was particularly impressive.

“We are delighted to have received such a strong interest in the Hornsby Art Prize. The standard of entries is regarded as being one of the finest in recent memory and all finalists are to be commended. We’ve received entries from a broad spectrum, including nationally recognised artists as well as significant emerging artists,” Mayor Ruddock said.

“I would like to congratulate all the finalists for their inspiring artworks. The Hornsby Art Prize provides our residents with a fantastic opportunity to experience contemporary art of the highest calibre first-hand in our own local area, and this year people are certainly in for a treat.”

This year’s esteemed judges are visual artists James Powditch, Nicole Mather, and Chris Langlois.

“Hornsby Art Society is passionate about the development of the visual arts and a cultural presence within the Hornsby Shire. The Hornsby Art Prize is a wonderful way to engage and enthuse the community and we encourage everyone to come along and enjoy this fabulous exhibition,” said Hornsby Art Society President, Chris Beard.

Winners of the Hornsby Art Prize, including the Hornsby Shire Local Artist Award, will be announced at an award ceremony on Friday 20 October. The Hornsby Art Prize Finalists’ Exhibition will be held at Wallarobba Arts and Cultural Centre from 20 October until 5 November, Tuesday-Sunday, 10am-4pm.
