Members met for the first time on the 8th February. Our speaker was Ken Bradley OAM who spoke of two men who served in the First World War. Ken, a member of our Society, has been researching all who served and who were connected in some way with our district. The results of his work are available to all and are most valuable for those working on family history.
The chosen subjects were both Tasmanians, one a champion woodchopper, Huon Pritchard, who won competitions at local shows. The other was Sir Wilmot Hudson Fysh, one of the founders of QANTAS. His holiday home was on the corner of Old Northern Road and Wyoming Road Dural and he is buried in St Jude’s Cemetery. Their stories are a contrast in fortune and fame altered by the events of war.
Future speakers have been arranged and cover local history and personalities, our June Roughley Memorial Lecture in August, on the rivers of New South Wales, will be given by Ian Hoskins. Our first tour, to the Historical Aircraft Restoration Society Aviation Museum at Albion Park is on Tuesday the 17th march. Our next meeting will be on the 14th march in History Cottage beside the honour roll in hayes park. Our guest speaker will be Ron Ray OAM from the Maritine Museum. His talk, “Cook/HMB Endeavour”, is most topical for the 250 anniversarry of the event at Botany Bay.
