Beyond the Brochure: Why More Local Travellers Are Turning to Expert Advice

By Danielle Lawson, MTA Travel

One of the things I enjoy most about my work is the initial conversation I have with clients when they start planning a holiday. Those early chats reveal what people really want from their travel, and over recent years I’ve noticed a clear shift. Travel today is no longer just about seeing famous landmarks or booking the cheapest deal online. Many of the Hills District travellers I work with are looking for holidays that feel personal, comfortable and thoughtfully planned.

They want trips that run smoothly from the moment they leave home so they can truly relax and enjoy the experience. While almost anyone can book flights and accommodation online, planning a journey that actually works well can be far more complex. People often tell me they become overwhelmed by endless options, confusing fare rules and mixed online reviews. That’s where I step in.

Based in Galston, I’m a local small business owner who works closely with families and travellers across our community. Recently, a local couple returned from a European holiday we planned together. What they appreciated most wasn’t just the destinations or hotels — it was knowing that the flights, transfers and hotel locations had all been carefully considered to make the journey easy.

I often visit clients at home before they travel so we can talk through the finer details and ensure they feel prepared. For many, the real value lies in peace of mind. Through my global travel partnerships, I’m also able to offer practical benefits such as room upgrades, early check‐ins or special experiences that make a trip feel seamless. For me, good travel planning isn’t about extravagance. It’s about listening, guiding and creating journeys that work from beginning to end.
