It was a special privilege to represent Hornsby Shire on Veterans Day.
It was a special privilege to represent Hornsby Shire on The occasion marked the 50th Anniversary of Australia’s involvement in the Vietnam War, and with the day itself, (18th August), marking the anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in 1966.
In addition, to the Hornsby service in Railway Park, a local service was held at the recently refurbished cenotaph in Glenorie’s Wal Buckingham Park. Joined by RSL subbranch members and Hills Deputy Mayor, Mitchel Blue, a fitting memorial was delivered for the 60 000 Australian service personnel that served over a 10-and-a-halfyear period and recognising the 523 lives lost and the 3000 wounded.
Importantly, it was a reminder of how the declining support for the war resulted in the poor treatment of our returning veterans. This should never occur again.
With the cenotaph now restored, it is also fitting that the next stage of the park plan will now be rolled out. Improvements to paving, landscaping, furniture etc. will be features of proposed work. The eventual plan being an overall precinct upgrade from the Bus terminus to the Memorial Hall.
More welcome news this month included the State Government back down on changes to rural land use. Much of last years proposed changes increased opportunities for rural landowners to value-add to their existing activities.
However, one change relating to visitor numbers on farm, has now been revised to remove the numbers cap. This has been a long journey and testament to the community and Government agencies working together for common-sense outcomes.
