100 th Anniversary of Fatima

This year marks the centenary of the appearance of Our Lady in the Portuguese village of Fatima, and St Benedict’s parishioners held a special celebration at the church in May in honour of this special anniversary.

Fatima, the small town where Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children in 1917, has since become a much-visited shrine. To mark this 100th anniversary, Pope Francis declared at Fatima, in the presence of 500,000 worshippers, that two of the three children – Jacinta and Francisco Marto – who sadly died in the 1918-1919 flu epidemic, were to be made saints. The third child, their cousin Lucia dos Santos who lived until 2005, is already on the way to sainthood.

Together for Humanity

A small group from the parish went to the Together for Humanity lunch held in the city in mid-May. Together for Humanity is a multi-faith, not-for- profit organisation that brings people from varied backgrounds together to promote understanding. The president of the group is a Muslim, the chairman is Christian, the national director is Jewish and the patron is an atheist. Together for Humanity aims to reflect our diverse society.

New defibrillator

The picture shows Parish Priest Father Bernard with the new defibrillator that the parish has acquired so that we can be prepared in the event of an occurrence of sudden cardiac arrest. A number of parishioners will also study the training videos so that they’ll know how to make the most of this potentially life-saving equipment.
