Loose-fill asbestos insulation – Free testing for Hornsby homeowners

Homeowners in the Hornsby Shire now have access to free sample testing for loose-fill asbestos insulation.

Hornsby State Liberal MP Matt Kean said ensuring the health and safety of Hornsby residents is a priority for the NSW Government.

The Loose-Fill Asbestos Insulation Taskforce has recently identified one property in the Hornsby Shire as having loose-fill asbestos insulation.

“Although it is only one property it may be an indication that other residences will be affected,” Mr Kean said.

“I encourage homeowners in Hornsby Shire to learn more about loose-fill asbestos insulation and to take advantage of this opportunity to have their ceiling tested.”

The Hornsby Shire is one of 28 local government areas (LGAs), eight of which are in the Sydney metropolitan area, where the NSW Government is providing ceiling insulation testing for residential properties built prior to 1980.

Loose-fill asbestos insulation was installed in the ceiling spaces of ACT and NSW premises in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Taskforce is currently delivering a voluntary purchase and demolition program in the 28 LGAs. The NSW Government has determined that demolition, comprehensive site remediation and disposal are the only options to remove the health risk of loose-fill asbestos from affected properties.

“This program provides safety, certainty and support for our citizens and offers a solution to the problem of loose-fill asbestos when it is positively identified in homes,” Mr Kean said.

“Through testing, owners in Hornsby Shire will now be able to find out if their homes may be affected.”

Owners have until 1 August 2016 to register for free testing. For more details and registration visit www.fairtrading.nsw.gov.au or call Service NSW on 13 77 88.
