Hornsby Shire Prepares for Bushfires and Sustainability

Living in Hornsby Shire means enjoying beautiful bushland and rural landscapes, but it also means being prepared for the challenges that come with living in a bushfire-prone area, while planning for a sustainable and connected future.

Bushfire readiness is something we all need to take seriously as we head into the warmer months. I encourage residents to prepare their properties by clearing gutters, managing vegetation around homes, checking that hoses are accessible, and ensuring everyone knows what to do if a fire threatens. Having a bushfire survival plan and staying informed about conditions and warnings is also essential.

There are also simple ways we can make our homes more sustainable through Council’s Love Your Home video series of home energy hacks, featuring residents from Cowan and Berowra. Small changes such as installing solar panels, sealing drafts, improving insulation, collecting rainwater and choosing native plants can reduce energy and water usage while helping lower household costs.

In Glenorie, planning is progressing to help shape the village’s future while protecting the qualities that make it such a special part of the Shire. The Glenorie Village Investigation report considers opportunities for housing, local services, village facilities and improved connections, while recognising the area’s rural and semi-rural character. As Glenorie spans both Hornsby and The Hills Shires, careful coordination and community input is important as planning continues.

I am also continuing to explore opportunities to improve walking connections in Dural. As part of Council’s Active Transport Strategy, I am seeking further community interest in a potential shared footpath along Galston Road, between Carters Road and Old Northern Road. This would provide a safer and more accessible connection for residents, young families and anyone wanting to walk rather than drive for short local trips. I have received positive community feedback so far, which will help inform consideration of the proposal.

Together, these initiatives are about preparing for the future while protecting what we value most about Hornsby Shire – our people, our environment and our strong sense of community.
