It was wonderful to welcome our Kindergarten students to big school for the start of their journey in primary school. They enjoyed working with their Peer Leaders learning all about the school expectations and routines. Every year 6 students is a leader at Hillside and they take on many roles and responsibilities. At Hillside all year 6 are inducted as school leaders at Presentation Night. Our School Leaders have many responsibilities which enable them to develop leadership and communication skills they carry through to their future life. The leaders conduct all assemblies, represent the school at community functions, run weekly fitness activities for the whole school, organise fundraising days for chosen charities, oversee the PBEL rewards program and are trained as Library Monitors. This ensures all our students move onto high school with confidence and leadership experience.
We are fortunate to receive a Woolworths Junior Landcare Grant to refurbish the garden in front of the library including the painting of a mural and the planting of edible native plants. The students have been working on designs for the mural and the garden.
This year sporting activities will be a crucial inclusion in the school program. All students from Kindergarten to Year 6 will be participating in the Small School’s Swimming Carnival early in the term. It is wonderful seeing every child enjoying joining the older students in noodle or kickboard races.
Successfully receiving a Sporting Schools Grant for Term 1, all students will be learning the skills needed to play volleyball. Once again we are fortunate having the expertise of Ty coming every Friday to work with the students and utilising our beach volley ball court.
This term also sees the establishment of our OOSH services for our students. The successful tender Northwest Community Childcare will be setting up the facility in one of the classrooms. This will be a wonderful service for our families.
