Hills Youth ‘Live It Up’

Sydney Hills Youth are getting ready to celebrate National Youth Week 2016 with the first Live It Up festival at Balcombe Heights Estate on Sunday 10 April. This festival is an exciting new initiative of The Hills Shire Council supported by local community and youth services.

Mayor of The Hills Shire Dr Michelle Byrne said local community groups and services have been instrumental in instigating and shaping this exciting new youth event.

“Council has been fortunate to have the support of some incredibly hardworking youth and community groups in the production of this fantastic event for local youth,” Mayor Byrne said.

“Live It Up will give local services the opportunity to meet with, encourage and create support networks around young people. These important connections will provide youth with a point of contact for many of the youth-related issues that they or others around them may experience during their transition to adulthood,” she said.

2realise and Totem Skateboarding are just two of the many services that will be involved in Live It Up on 10 April. These services have also been instrumental in providing a skateboarding program specifically for youth, run each fortnight at Balcombe Heights Estate Skate Park since the start of the school term. The program, which will continue to run until the end of term 2, has provided young people with a space to be active, connected and engaged outside of school hours.

Skateboarding workshops are not the only exciting activity on the program for Live It Up, the festival will also feature music and dance performances from local youth, an outdoor movie, tasty food, slow-motion video booth, DJ, rock climbing, youth service stalls and more.

“By showcasing the outstanding community programs, services and events available to youth within The Hills Shire, Council hopes to encourage youth to access relevant services and encourage help seeking behaviour. We want young people in The Hills to grow up feeling supported, knowing there are people and services available to help them,” Mayor Byrne said.
