Standing proudly on Old Northern Road, just south of the school, the Glenorie Memorial Hall has been at the heart of community life for more than 90 years. More than just a building, it is a place where generations have gathered, celebrated, remembered, and supported one another.
The Hall was built as a memorial to local men and women who served in World War I. Its foundation stone was laid in 1932, and the building officially opened in 1933. Constructed from full brick with a metal roof, the Hall features distinctive decals representing the three military services, a map of Australia, and the RSL emblem. Costing more than £1,000, the project was funded entirely by local residents, demonstrating the strong community spirit defining Glenorie.
Over the decades, the Hall became much more than a memorial. It hosted bush dances, film nights, fundraising events, celebrations, and countless gatherings. For many residents, it was the social hub where lifelong friendships were formed.
During the devastating 2002 bushfires, the Hall became a vital focal point, providing a place for people to gather, donate, share information, and maintain connection during uncertain times.
Inside, visitors can view framed historical photographs of local families, homes, and landmarks, curated by historian Ray Whiteman. Adjacent is the Glenorie Roll of Honour in the Wal Buckingham Memorial Garden.
The Hall continues to evolve while retaining heritage significance. Ownership transferred to Hornsby Council in 1976. Recent improvements include new Rolls of Honour (2024), revitalised gardens, and the Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence (2025), featuring sandstone carvings celebrating First Australians, agriculture, transport, sport, volunteers, and defence services.
Further accessibility upgrades completed in 2026, along with engraved community pavers, ensure the Hall remains both a treasured landmark and welcoming gathering place. The Glenorie Memorial Hall stands as a tribute to those who served, the families who built this district, and volunteers continuing to strengthen it today.
