GALSTON PUBLIC SCHOOL

Only half way through Term 1 and so much is happening. Stage 3 Surf Education excursion was a valuable educational day where students learnt about ‘rip identification’ as well as having fun participating in relay racing with wading, dolphin dives and body boarding.

Each year the whole school participates in a Peer Support program. The program (which has just begun) will enable students to participate in a new module, Moving Forward, which focuses on resilience. The experiences in the module help students to identify their qualities and strengths, develop skills, respond with a range of strategies and seek support when faced with challenges. The module contains 8 sessions and during this time a Peer Leader from Year 6 will facilitate a small group of 6 younger students, who will work together through a number of structured activities.

At the Beecroft Zone PSSA Swimming Carnival held at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, Homebush recently, a courageous and determined Galston Public School team competed. The day was a great experience for them. The competition was tough and tiresome, however all the students swam competitively and proudly represented their school.

Before the end of the term the Student Representative Council (SRC) will be holding their first mufti day to support ‘Story Dogs’. Story Dogs is a fun and unique reading support program that improves children’s reading and communication skills by children reading to a trained companion dog and its handler. By making a gold coin donation, funds will be donated to this very worthy organisation.

‘Vegetable Garden Thank You’. A big thank you to Warren and Tim, two local retired gentlemen who have been volunteering their time to run a lunchtime gardening group for interested children. The latest harvest in the form of pumpkins is proudly on display in the front office. Also a big thank you to Think Water Dural for generously donating irrigation materials for the vegetable garden that will help the next crop.
