Galston Public School celebrated Education Week with the theme “Inspiring Excellence” on Monday, August 3rd, by taking everyone back to 1886. Students wore high collars and pinafores, teachers used dip pens instead of modern pens, and no one used screens.
It wasn’t just a costume day. The school has clocked 140 years of public education in Galston, and instead of marking it with a plaque or a speech, they handed the playground back to the past. Hoops rattled across the asphalt. Kids sat cross-legged teaching each other string figures their parents had long forgotten. Someone’s grandmother, watching from the fence line, could be heard telling a group of Year 2s they were doing the cup-and-saucer trick wrong.
Sports House Leaders usually in charge of relay races and sports carnivals found themselves running a very different kind of session, coaching classmates through skipping rhymes and hoop rolling most had never tried. By the afternoon, the school’s performance groups took over, singing and dancing for a crowd thick with parents, grandparents and family who’d turned up just to watch.
That community spirit gets another outing on 20th October, when Galston Public opens its celebrations to everyone — past students, present families, anyone who’s got a Galston Public story of their own.
