Cherrybrook Violinist Headed for Concerto Competition Grand FinalCongratulations Cherrybrook violin student Sharon Zhao, who has won a place as a junior finalist in the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition Grand Final.

Sharon is a Year 9 student at Meriden School on a full music scholarship, and currently studies with Caron Chan.

Sharon has won many awards from various competitions and eisteddfods around Sydney. She was accepted into the Australian Chamber Orchestra Academy and the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp in both 2021 and 2022. In 2020, Sharon was awarded her AMusA diploma with Distinction and was awarded her LMusA diploma with Distinction in 2022. In March, Sharon was invited to perform as a featured outstanding diplomate at the 2023 AMEB Diploma Ceremony.

For the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition, Sharon will be playing Sibelius’ Violin Concerto in D min, Opus 47.

2023 is the 39th year the Ku-ring-gai Philharmonic Orchestra (KPO) has organised the NSW Secondary Schools Concerto Competition.

It is open to secondary school pupils in years 7-12 at schools throughout NSW and the ACT, with this year’s program attracting over 100 entrants.

Finalists are competing for significant awards – including $10,000 in cash prizes – as well as keenly sought professional development opportunities.
