The next meeting of the Bromeliad Society of Australia will be on Saturday, 11th June at the Federation Pavilion, Castle Hill Showground, Showground Road, Castle Hill off Doran Drive. Bromeliad sales at 10am and the meeting commencing at 12noon.
Our special guests will be Greg and Narelle Aizlewood, growers and hybridizers of many wonderful plants.
Narelle is a grower of many show-worthy plants as well as an accredited judge for the Bromeliad Society International (BSI), one of the few judges here in Australia.
Greg and Narelle Aizlewood reside in Stieglitz located on the coast midway between the Gold Coast and Brisbane, Queensland. They have been growing bromeliads since 1985 and have travelled extensively in South America to Mexico, Peru, Bolivia, Brazil, and Ecuador.
Greg has a very interesting Tillandsia collection, a lot of which has been grown from seed. Greg’s love of bromeliads originally started with Billbergias and he has registered quite a few Billbergias hybrids as well as a growing and hybridizing many genera of Bromeliads, including Neoregelia, Dyckia and Vriesea to name a few. Whereas Narelle enjoys working with the softer leaved bromeliads.
One of their hybrids is shown here, Vriesea ‘Charlotte Joy’ with them and then fully grown. Greg also ‘dabbles in plant supports and hangers, some of which will be for sale at the meeting.
Greg is a director on the board of the BSI and he will be explaining his role and the significance of the BSI.
The committee has approached Narelle to conduct a Judges’ School for our members who wish to go down that path. The course is conducted over 3 years and involves quite a bit of study in order to be able to identify all aspects of a well grown plant. BSA Meetings include plant sales, club news, raffles and competitions as well as providing an opportunity to meet with like-minded people in a friendly and inviting environment.
