Arcadia Rural Fire Service

The brigade recently held its AGM for 2019. Our senior captain, Shannon, recently stepped down and Ian Furnass has stepped into the role. We wish to congratulate all the position holders, and here is to a successful 2019/2020.

On the 29th of May multiple crews from Hornsby and The Hills were called to a structure alight at Berowra Waters. Unfortunately a fire burnt 2 houses whilst damaging a third. Firefighters from NSW RFS and FRNSW were on scene to extinguish the fire. Access to these properties was difficult and required transportation via RFS boat. Over the long weekend in June, crews were called to an incident alongside FRNSW, NSW ambulance and NSW Police, at Marramarra National Park. A young child had respiratory trouble, which saw the Toll Ambulance helicopter assist in transporting the child to hospital. We were assured later that day that the child recovered well and the family were in good spirits. Crews have also been busy assisting at local hazard reductions. Arcadia attended the Hillside HR in the Hills District.

Throughout winter many people enjoy camping, especially over the school holidays. Local national parks, including Marramarra, are popular destinations for these short getaways. Even though the cooler weather has set in, the risk of bush fire has not diminished. It is important to plan your campsite before heading off. A couple of points to consider include good access and escape routes, a nearby safe location to go to in case of fire, be familiar with the parks local evacuation plan, and know if you are within mobile phone reception or if you need a satellite phone. If the weather permits and there are no fire bans, a camp fire is always enjoyable, but remember to put the fire out completely with water before departing! You can find out more information on camping bush fire safety from the NSW RFS website.

Many members have been busy attending a number of courses to further their knowledge and skills. We have members currently on the Advanced Firefighter course and the Breathing Apparatus Operator course.
