Middle Dural School Delves Into Megafauna History

Middle Dural Public School has taken students on an imaginative journey deep into the nation’s prehistoric past, with a Term 3 program that blended history, science and the wonder of Australian megafauna into an engaging, hands-on learning experience.

With the school’s characteristically small class sizes, teachers were able to tailor lessons to individual learning styles while tapping into students’ growing curiosity about the ancient world. The result was a vibrant “Ancient Land” unit that introduced children to the colossal kangaroos, oversized wombats and giant lizards that once roamed Australia, alongside the dinosaurs that continue to fascinate young learners.

Stage 1 students enthusiastically explored how plants and animals have evolved over millennia, using fossils and storytelling to understand extinction and environmental change. Their studies culminated in what quickly became the highlight of the term — a volcano experiment that transformed the classroom into a miniature science lab. Students designed and painted their own papier-mâché volcano before watching the classic combination of bicarbonate soda and vinegar erupt in a frothy, crowd-pleasing explosion.

The term wrapped up with a lively visit from Mimosa Public School, whose band performed for Middle Dural students and their neighbours at Dooral Early Learning Centre. Mimosa’s team also delivered hands-on workshops that allowed students to try a range of instruments, helping teachers identify emerging talent and High Potential and Gifted Education opportunities.

Teachers say the experience not only sparked scientific curiosity but also highlighted the rich artistic potential within the school community — a reminder of the diverse learning pathways available in NSW public schools.
