GLENORIE, NSW — The Ray Whiteman Heritage Fence, a project five years in the making, has finally been completed, marking a milestone for the Glenorie community.
The project has been brought to life thanks to the tireless dedication of local volunteers, sponsors, and artists who contributed their time, expertise, and resources. Central to the project was sculptor, stonemason, and artist Karl Van Middeldyk, whose craftsmanship is showcased in the final carving: the striking Rising Sun Army emblem, generously donated to the project by Van Middeldyk.
The Glenorie Progress Association (GPA) led the initiative, supported by the Fence Sub-Committee, local hall committees, and the Glenorie RSL Subbranch. Volunteers played a crucial role in transforming the vision into reality, providing countless hours of effort behind the scenes.
The project was made possible through the generous support of significant sponsors, including Bendigo Community Bank, Galston ($50,000), the NSW Government ($30,000 in total, including grants through Robyn Preston MP), and the Whiteman Family Trust ($20,000), alongside contributions from Veterans Grants. Pier sponsorship was provided by local families, including the Shore, Hattersley, and Hughes families.
Additional support came from Dixon Rock & Block, HCM Building, PF Formations, and The Hills Shire Council, while medium contributors included A&E Nicholson, the Rotary Club of Greater Hills, and community members such as Diana Paton and Mark Holt, who provided invaluable in-kind support.
Hornsby Shire Council contributed significantly to the planning, park upgrades, infill fencing, and paving, with special acknowledgment to Warren Waddell for his tireless work coordinating planning and fundraising efforts.
Community members of all ages also played a part, with every donation, large or small, helping weave the fabric of the project’s success. The Heritage Fence stands as a lasting testament to the dedication, compassion, and generosity of the Glenorie community—a symbol intended to inspire and endure for generations.
The Glenorie Progress Association continues to welcome new members. Interested residents can attend meetings on the second Thursday of each month at the Glenorie RSL Club or join online via www.glenorieprogress.org, with membership options starting at $20 per year.
