Our Gorge! Yes there is a sense of ownership when we think about the Galston Gorge. Anyone who has travelled through this heritage listed masterpiece of engineering and beauty, has a story to tell.

They are the intimate recollections that make a community. Like all history they vary, mostly true but it depends of the view and knowledge of the teller. Like the ammunition found at the bridge! Evidence of a planned or committed murder? Or a returned soldier disposing of a wartime souvenir.

The archaeology evidence of the Gorge tells so much about the history of our community. The growth of the citrus fruit industry; the method of bridge construction; the bicycle races; the happy picnics; the requirements of horse drawn vehicles and the evidence of the original inhabitants.

At the Historical Society’s September meeting, President Michael Bell, gave his talk on that evidence. Making use of photos taken over many years, the Society archives; the memories of residents past and present; plus his personal musings, Michael led the audience, of over one hundred, down Murphy’s, past water troughs and over the bridges and on to the top of the other side.

The 12th October meeting will be the Society’s AGM. This is always an enjoyable afternoon because the major part of the meeting is a Show and Tell. After a brief formal period the gathering is handed over to members and friends to tell about their special object and why it is significant for them. It is a satisfying and interesting to hear these personal stories.

The Society’s open afternoon will be the fourth Sunday of the month: October ’s will be the 26th. Visitors are welcome to come to History Cottage, beside the Cenotaph in Hayes Park, between 1.00 and 4.00pm to research and peruse what is available.

Next meeting 12th October in the Galston Uniting Church, School Road, Galston. Starting at 2.00pm. Free entry.
