It’s winter! Whilst we’ve been busy collecting firewood to stay warm at home, have you thought about your winter home fire safety plan?

Have you discussed it with every member of your household, including the kids? Sadly, last winter saw 1,036 residential fires in NSW.

Like a bushfire safety plan, you need to discuss your escape routes with every household member, what to do if there is a fire, and where to go. You need to check your smoke alarms and replace any that are not working. Smoke is the greatest cause of injuries and fatalities.

You also need to ensure that you keep looking while cooking, that everything is kept 1 metre from the heater, regularly check electric blankets for damage, ensure safe charging of batteries, and have your fireplace and flue cleaned annually. You can download your winter safety checklist from Fire + Rescue NSW www.fire.gov.nsw.au

In local news, Arcadia RFB recently held their AGM. Congratulations to all position holders. We are looking forward to the year ahead. Thank you to those members who have stepped down from their roles, for the effort and enthusiasm they have given over the past year. We would also like to welcome PJ back, one of our former captains, into the ranks of Deputy Captain.

Some members attended the award ceremony for long service in the Hornsby/Ku-Ring-Gai District. Years of service within the district ranged from 10 years to 50 years of service. That’s a lot of experience right there! Congratulations to our Arcadian members: Craig 32 years, Mike 32 years, Ian 20 years, Sally 20 years, Michele 16 years, Mel 14 years, Grant 13 years, Mike 11 years, Nick 10 years, Lachlan 10 years.

Have you thought about joining Arcadia Rural Fire Brigade? Arcadia has been serving the community since 1941, after the community rallied together during the 1939 bushfires that ravaged Sydney and the local area. Since then, Arcadia RFB has been supported by members of the neighbourhood to consistently help others in a variety of circumstances. Volunteering offers you the opportunity to learn new and valuable skills and experiences that will not only assist you in your volunteer roles, but even in day-to-day life and your workplace. It is also an opportunity to make some lifelong friendships.
