Community Group Visits at Banana Cabana
With no power, because of area electrical upgrading, the normal May meeting was cancelled. Not to be deterred a group of members took the opportunity to visit one of the special places within our community; “Banana Cabana”.
This wonderful facility, for the rehabilitation and care of rescued primates, is interesting, most educational and a credit to Sue the owner and Natasha and Nicole, her dedicated helpers. The group included three long term life members, one of whom had just celebrated her one hundredth birthday. We finished the day with a most generous afternoon tea, prepared by members, overlooking the gardens and shelters of the fortunate animals.
History Cottage, beside the Cenotaph in Hayes Park, is now open on the fourth Sunday of each month, between 1.00 and 4.00pm. Members are on duty to assist with enquiries from the those wishing to study any historical matter, especially local and family history.
The regular opening has also given time to archive the extensive amount of material generously donated over recent years; treasures have been found. If readers have photographs and papers of a local nature, or have knowledge that may assist in identification of what is being archived, the Society suggests they make contact.
On the 14th June the guest speaker will be Rod Best, retired lawyer and a descendant George Best. He will outline the significance of the Bigge Commission and of George Best’s evidence; touching on this fascinating aspect of our area’s early European settlement during the administration of Gov. Macquarie.
At our 12th July meeting the long anticipated guest speaker will be Carolyn Broadhead. She will tell the fascinating story of her French connection, First War romance against The Australian Government, to a lost connection with a group of French immigrants to Australia.
Meetings are in the Galston Uniting Church, School Road, Galston, starting at 2.00pm. Entry is free with afternoon tea for a gold coin.
