BROMELIAD SOCIETY OF AUSTRALIA

Guest Speaker Ken Bradley – The Remembrance Driveway

The Bromeliad Society of Australia will hold its next meeting at Federation Pavilion, Castle Hill Showground on Saturday, 13 April with plant sales commencing at 11am followed by the meeting at 12noon. Access is via the Showground entrance off Showground Road into Doran Drive, Castle Hill, with plenty of parking on site.

Guest speaker Ken Bradley, history buff and passionate gardener, will discuss the significance of the Remembrance Driveway.

This year the Remembrance Driveway celebrated its 65th anniversary at Government House with a launch of a design competition for a new memorial in the ACT. This memorial will be an extension of the 23 rest stops dedicated to Victoria Cross recipients along the Hume and Federal Highways between Sydney and Canberra and will honour the four VC recipients from the Afghanistan conflict.

The Remembrance Driveway is a tribute from those who remember yesterday and have faith in the future. It commemorates those who have served in the Australian Defence Forces in the Second World War and subsequent wars or who have served since then in operational theatres around the world, in defence of the Nation’s interests. The Driveway has achieved the form and status its founders imagined. It is a living memorial of trees under the careful stewardship of the volunteers of the Remembrance Driveway Committee and will continue to grow as new opportunities present themselves.

Recent activity on the Driveway in partnership with RMS includes the 45,000 trees plantation near Campbelltown to honour the Australian Defence Force, and the three large depictions of the Victoria Cross at the M7/M5 interchange.

BSA Meetings include plant sales, club news, raffles and competitions as well as providing an opportunity to meet with likeminded people in a friendly and inviting environment. Contact Ian Hook – mobile 0408202269, email: [email protected] website: www.bromeliad.org.au
