Junior School Students get a taste for Competition

Northholm Grammar Junior School students experienced the thrill of competition at the Royal Easter Show for the first time this year.

The Junior School Agriculture Team was established as a co-curricular activity in 2016 by Senior students as a way for the younger students to gain experience with the School’s poultry and livestock. Since that time, the Junior students have learnt how to handle chickens, trim goat hooves, wash cattle and prepare their own silkie chickens for local poultry competitions.

This year, the Junior Agriculture Team entered 11 of their flock of school bred silkie chickens into the poultry classes at the Royal Easter Show. The team also prepared rare breed chickens and Indian Runner ducks bred by the Senior School for entry into the show. As part of the program, students were able to experience the Show prior to the public as a ‘behind the scenes’ excursion. The Junior students gained insight into show preparation and supported the school’s Dorper Show Team during the first day of judging.

The team was rewarded for their efforts with exceptional results in the poultry classes, receiving two first places and two second places in the Soft Feather category. The first placed cockerel entered also won the Champion of the class.
