From the moment your child starts their first formal years of school, they begin a lifelong learning journey in Early Years Education.
Northholm Grammar knows not all children learn the same, so through a personalised learning approach we seek to understand each student as an individual from Kindergarten onwards.
Through play, inquiry and a hands-on approach, “…we aim to instil a strong foundation to extend and develop students for their future endeavours,” says Erin Werner, Northholm Primary Years Curriculum Coordinator. She makes some recommendations on what to look for in a Kindergarten for your child.
A strong foundation in literacy and numeracy
The National Inquiry into the Teaching of Literacy (2005) found that students learn best when teachers adopt an integrated approach to reading skills, leading into mathematical understandings. At Northholm, a Literacy and Numeracy mentor is employed to ensure individual progress is tracked and students are engaged in outstanding learning experiences.
Focusing on mental health and wellbeing
Calm and resilient children can focus, retain more information and take safe risks without fear of failure. The Resilience Project works with over 200 schools across Australia, including Northholm Grammar, to help develop key pillars of resilience: gratitude to be thankful for what you have, empathy to consider others’ feelings and mindfulness to build a sense of calm and awareness of your surroundings.
Helping children find their passions
Finally, school should also be a place for Kindy students to begin to find the talents and interests in sport, creative arts and co-curricular activities that will bring them joy and develop their social skills as they forge friendships, and leadership, communication and cooperation skills.
