GALSTON RURAL FIRE BRIGADE NEWS March 2020

From Fires to Floods
Galston RFB made a rather quick swing from fighting fires across the state to battling the aftermath of storms and flooding. Our firies have been busy responding to storm damage from the recent downpours that hit Sydney. We cleared trees off of roads and powerlines. While also closing dangerous roads and working to open others. We assisted the SES with the initial search for a car that had been reported as swept away in flood waters. Emergency services weren’t able to locate the reported car and police are continuing with their enquiries.

Welcome Back Galston 1
Home at last. Our good ole trusty workhorse Galston 1 has finally returned after a long few months of deployment fighting the Northern NSW fires. Our offroad Fire Truck was stationed all over the north of the state with a rotation of crew from local, NSW, and Interstate firies. We even spotted some visiting US firefighters utilising it. It’s now tucked up next to our Pumper, ready to serve the local community again.

Reminder About Permits
Galston firies responded to an illegal pile burn recently and need to extinguish it.

If you are planning a pile burn and are unsure of the rules, as a reminder permits for pile burns are required all year-round. During the ‘Bush fire Danger Period’ your local Rural Fire Brigade may also need to inspect the pile before a permit is issued. Fire Permits are free to obtain and help to ensure that fire is used safely and to minimise the danger to you, your property and the community. For further information on fire permits, visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au.

New Lights Donated
Thank you to our local Bendigo Bank in Galston and Gary Mangan… who generously donated three brand new portable Pelican lights to the brigade. The battery powered compact area lights can extend 6 feet high, provide an ecologically responsible alternative to generator powered lights and will allow us to do our work safely.
